The Adelaide Strikers fell 32 runs short against the Perth Scorchers at Adelaide Oval.
Fresh off a successful Ashes campaign, hometown hero Alex Carey led the way with the bat, scoring a fiery 71 runs, while Lloyd Pope was the standout with the ball.
After being sent out to bat, the Scorchers showed early intent before Pope made the initial breakthrough, combining with a spectacular diving catch from captain Matt Short to claim the Strikers first wicket. The leggy then followed up in style, clean bowling Cooper Connolly with the very next delivery. He finished as the pick of the bowlers, ending his spell with figures of 2/36.
Short and returning spinner Cameron Boyce also chipped in with a wicket each as the Scorchers closed their innings at 4/232.
In reply, Carey showcased his class at the top of the order as he combined magnificently with fellow opener Short. The pair put on a solid 93-run partnership as the skipper added 52 runs from 31 balls.
However, despite the pair’s efforts with the bat, the Strikers were unable to reel in the target, with the Scorchers securing a 32-run victory.
Tim Paine and his men will regroup quickly as they hit the road to take on the Melbourne Stars at the MCG on Tuesday, January 13.
