Strikers seal dramatic win over Heat to keep playoff hopes alive

The Adelaide Strikers claimed a dramatic victory over the Brisbane Heat with two balls remaining, keeping hopes of a WBBL playoff place alive.

Tahlia McGrath set up her side's victory with the ball before smashing back-to-back boundaries to seal the win and be named player of the match.

The Strikers elected to bowl first after winning the toss and immediately got on top with the ball.

Jemma Barsby dismissed Grace Harris, caught and bowled, in the first over, as the Strikers squeezed the Heat. McGrath (3-27) and Amanda-Jade Wellington (2-34) tore through the middle-order but some late hitting lifted the Heat to 149.

Eleanor Larosa also took her first WBBL wicket as she impressed both with the new ball and at the death to take figures of 2-24.

Beaumont and Laura Wolvaardt continued their strong opening partnership to pile on 99 for the first wicket. The English star smashed 64 off 40 balls before falling, while the South African skipper fell just short of her half-century for 49.

The Strikers needed a challenging 14 runs from the final over but young gun Ellie Johnston smoked a monstrous six off the first ball to ease the required rate. After a single off the second ball, McGrath found the fence twice to confirm victory for the Strikers and finish 24*.

After this win, Luke Williams' side move up to fifth, level on points with the Renegades in third, but with both Sydney teams close behind with games in hand.

Next up, the Strikers host the table-topping Hobart Hurricanes on Friday night in another crucial match.
