Carey to lead Strikers as vice-captain

Carey, 28, will steer the Strikers in the absence of captain Travis Head who remains with the Australian Test squad.

Vice-captain of the Australian T20I and ODI squads, Carey will become the seventh person to captain the Strikers in BBL action joining the likes of Head, Michael Klinger, Brad Hodge and Phillip Hughes.

Carey said he was excited to take on the role but would lean on several of his experienced teammates in guiding the side.

“I’m looking forward to picking the brains of one of the greatest leaders we’ve had in this country in Cameron White,” he said.

“He’s obviously played a lot of T20 cricket and his record is unbelievable. I’m looking forward to learning a lot from him and working with our bowlers closely.

“I think we’ve got a really experienced group of players. Peter Siddle is one who’ll look to lead that attack I’d imagine and Wes Agar is in unbelievable form (as is) big Billy Stanlake and Rashid Khan.

“The boys are all ready to go. We can’t wait to get to Manuka Oval and start our campaign.”

The Strikers travel to Canberra to begin their BBL|09 season against the Sydney Thunder on Saturday night at Manuka Oval. FULL FIXTURE
