The finals chase continues

22 January 2018

Finals race heating up with only a handful of games remaining in KFC BBL|07

1. Perth Scorchers
Matches played:
9
Won:
7
Lost:
2
Points:
14
Net run rate:
0.13
Matches to come:
v Strikers (WACA)

All-but guaranteed to host a home final in the west and in line to finish on top of the table for a third time. One slip up from the Renegades, who still have three matches to play, will lock in a Scorchers semi-final at the Furnace. The reigning BBL champions finish their minor round campaign with a blockbuster against the Strikers at the WACA which could determine who claims top spot.

2. Adelaide Strikers
Matches played:
8
Won:
6
Lost:
2
Points:
12
Net run rate:
0.886
Matches to come:
v Renegades (ES), v Scorchers (WACA)

Now certain finalists, the Strikers can cement a home final by toppling the Renegades in Melbourne on Monday night. A loss may mean the Strikers will need to topple the Scorchers at the Furnace to lock in semi at Adelaide Oval, depending on the Renegades’ run home. The team’s strong net run rate will work in its favour and could see the Strikers claim top spot for the third time in the past four seasons.

Preview: Renegades v Strikers

3. Hobart Hurricanes
Matches played:
9
Won:
5
Lost:
4
Points:
10
Net run rate:
-0.277
Matches to come:
v Stars (MCG)

Consecutive losses to fellow finals contenders Adelaide and Perth has put the Hurricanes in a precarious position with one match to play. Hobart’s poor net run rate – the worst of the top five sides – means the ‘Canes final game against the Stars becomes a must-win. A third-straight defeat would leave the door ajar for the Thunder to replace the Hurricanes in the four if they can upset the Renegades in Canberra on Wednesday night.

4. Melbourne Renegades
Matches played:
7
Won:
4
Lost:
3
Points:
8
Net run rate:
.345
Matches to come:
v Strikers (ES), v Thunder (MO), v Heat (GABBA)

The Renegades are in control of their own destiny as they chase their first finals appearance since BBL|02. With three games to come, the ‘Gades can still secure a home final if results go their way, but losses could see them slip as low as sixth by season’s end. Could end the Thunder’s season with a win in Canberra on Wednesday night.

5. Sydney Thunder
Matches played:
9
Won:
4
Lost:
5
Points:
8
Net run rate:
0.006
Matches to come:
v Renegades (MO)

A dominant win over the Stars kept the Thunder’s finals hopes alive with one game to come. They must defeat the Renegades and hope either the ‘Gades or Hobart fail to win another match for the remainder of the season. The Hurricanes in particular will be sweating on Wednesday night’s result at Manuka Oval given their poor net run rate.

6. Brisbane Heat
Matches played:
9
Won:
4
Lost:
5
Points:
8
Net run rate:
-.331
Matches to come:
v Renegades (GABBA)

A mathematical chance to qualify for finals, but there’s little hope for the Heat from here realistically. Brisbane need to beat the Renegades in the final match of the BBL|07 minor round, pray for a string of favourable results, and hope they can turn around a disastrous net run rate to usurp two of the Hurricanes, Renegades and Thunder.

7. Sydney Sixers
Matches played:
9
Won:
3
Lost:
6
Points:
6
Net run rate:
.236
Matches to come:
v Stars (SCG)

Last year’s runners-up are out of this season’s finals race, but could still finish as high as fifth pending other results. The Sixers play the bottom-placed Stars in their final match of the season.

8. Melbourne Stars
Matches played:
8
Won:
1
Lost:
7
Points:
2
Net run rate:
-1.028
Matches to come:
v Sixers (SCG), v Hurricanes (MCG)

The Stars will miss BBL finals for the first time in their history. They have the worst run rate in the competition and must win their remaining two matches to even have a chance of lifting themselves off the bottom of the ladder.
