Strikers' top five moments of WBBL|02

24 January 2017

1. Sophie the centurion destroys the Hurricanes

Sophie Devine Innings

Sophie Devine’s blistering century on Boxing Day off of just 48 balls single-handedly defeated the Hurricanes, while she became just the second woman in WBBL history to reach the milestone. The New Zealand international was a standout performer for the Strikers all season, also earning selection in the WBBL team of the tournament for her 13 sixes and match-winning performances.

2. Patterson’s insane run-out from the deep

Patterson's incredible run out

The opening match of the Strikers’ WBBL|02 campaign brought with it one of the highlights of the season and an important win early in the piece. When Sophie Molineux cut with power to the boundary, Bridget Patterson’s rocket-arm intervened from way out deep to dismiss Molly Strano with a direct hit as she was well short of her ground. The run-out inspired a spectacular effort in the field, which saw the Strikers successfully defend 116.

3. Beaumont and Wellington partnership

Amanda Wellington Innings

England international Tammy Beaumont stood tall when the wickets were falling to register an unbeaten half-century at more than a run-a-ball in the Strikers’ crunch match against the Brisbane Heat. Spin-bowler Amanda Wellington turned destroyer when it was her turn to bat against the Brisbane Heat. Coach Andrea McCauley’s masterstroke to shift Wellington up the order was a striking success, as she exploded with 46 off just 25 deliveries, including a lofted drive for six.

4. The super over thriller

Super Over STR v Heat

Beaumont continued her form from the match prior as she struck yet another half-century to establish a solid foundation for the Strikers in pursuit of the Heat’s 127. The match ended in a thriller, where Sarah Coyte managed to run two to bring up the tie. The super over saw the Strikers finish on 3/4, while the Heat managed a single and a boundary on the first two balls to take the win.

5. Price’s dive dismisses Lanning

Meg Lanning Wicket

Alex Price’s spectacular diving catch to dismiss superstar Meg Lanning arrived at the perfect time in a tough match against the Melbourne Stars. She momentarily shifted the momentum back into her side’s favour when she tracked back through cover with a run and dive which no batter would defy. While the catch sizzled in the highlights reel, her side could not contain the Stars who were ultimately stronger on the day.
