Strikers fall short of WBBL finals

12 January 2019

The Adelaide Strikers’ brave late charge for a rebel WBBL|04 finals berth has ended.

The Strikers kept their slim hopes alive by emphatically beating the Perth Scorchers by 30 runs in Alice Springs on Saturday. The Scorchers also had been part of a three-way battle for the last semi berth going into this weekend’s matches.

But the Melbourne Renegades sealed their semi-final appearance when they overcame bottom side Hobart by three runs in a hard-fought clash later on Saturday. The other semi-finalists are the Sydney Thunder, Sydney Sixers and Brisbane Heat.

The best the Strikers can now hope for is fifth place if they can beat Perth in Alice Springs for back-to-back wins on Sunday.

Adelaide’s bitter-sweet triumph against the Scorchers on Saturday saw them retain the Faith Thomas Trophy, player-of-the-match Sophie Devine (59), Bridget Patterson (32), Danielle Hazell and Sarah Coyte (each 3/20) and Megan Schutt (2/21) all playing important roles in a strong allround team performance.
