New duo named for BBL opener

18 December 2018

Allrounder Matt Short could make his Strikers debut on Wednesday night against the Brisbane Heat

New Strikers Matt Short and Cameron Valente have been included in the club’s 13-player squad for Wednesday night’s KFC BBL|08 opener against the Brisbane Heat at the Gabba.

Victorian allrounder Short is in line to play his first match for the Strikers after representing the Melbourne Renegades last summer.

The 23-year-old scored 62 from 48 deliveries in his most recent BBL outing for the Renegades in January this year.

Promising South Australian Valente could make his Big Bash debut against his former club.

The 24-year-old, who was also previously listed by the Perth Scorchers, pressed his case for selection with two wickets in the club’s final practice match on Sunday and a 63-run innings in Saturday’s internal trial at Karen Rolton Oval.

Experienced batsman Colin Ingram will captain the side with Strikers skipper Travis Head currently representing Australia in the second Domain Test in Perth.

Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan has also been named after finishing as the tournament’s equal-leading wicket-taker last summer with 18 scalps from 11 matches.

Peter Siddle was released from Test duties by Cricket Australia and is also available for Wednesday night’s contest.

The match begins at 6:15pm local time (6:45pm ACDT) at the Gabba and will be broadcast live on Channel 7 and Fox Cricket.

Both teams will name their final XI at the new bat toss before the start of play.
