Match Report: Strikers v Sixers

21 November 2021

Adelaide Strikers have locked in a finals berth in the most emphatic way possible, celebrating a return to Adelaide Oval with an eight-wicket win over Sydney Sixers.

Running through a star-studded Sixers line-up for just 82, the Strikers collected the required runs with a remarkable 58 balls to spare to ensure their place in a four-way battle for the title against Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Renegades and Brisbane Heat.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Sixers were quickly made to regret the decision as Megan Schutt, Darcie Brown, Amanda-Jade Wellington, Tahlia McGrath and Sarah Coyte put on a clinic for the delighted fans in attendance.

Superstars Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry and Ash Gardner all fell cheaply to have the visitors 3/24, bringing international Shafali Verma to the crease. Her dismissal, run out without facing a ball, perfectly encapsulated the day for Sydney as they limped to 82 before losing their final wicket in the final over.

Brown claimed Player of the Match honours for her two early wickets, but it was a true team performance with the ball that saw all five bowlers making the score sheet for removing batters. Skipper McGrath was sublime, bowling four overs, conceding just eight runs and claiming the wicket of Radha Yadav. Sarah Coyte was equally remarkable, taking 3/12 from 3.2 overs while further contributing with a diving catch in the infield.

In pursuit of the small total, Strikers openers Dané van Niekerk and Katie Mack all but ended the contest in the opening overs, crunching several boundaries on their way to a rapid 50-run partnership. Both would be dismissed in the pursuit of more runs, but Laura Wolvaardt and McGrath were more than happy to stride to the middle and complete the task.

The Strikers are now guaranteed a finals berth, with Brisbane Heat likely to be the next opponent in an Adelaide Oval blockbuster scheduled for Wednesday night.
