Strikers stung by Sixers

05 January 2020

The Adelaide Strikers have suffered a second straight loss and fallen to fourth on the KFC BBL|09 table after going down by seven wickets to the Sydney Sixers in the first ever Big Bash match at Coffs Harbour.

The Strikers were chased down midway through the final over by the Sixers at a sold-out Coffs International Stadium with Sixers opener Josh Philippe (83* from 52 balls) doing most of the damage.

Alex Carey took his side to the crease after winning the pre-game bat flip but Adelaide struggled to build any meaningful momentum.

Jake Weatherald (15 off nine) and Phil Salt (25 off 13) burst out of the blocks while Carey (29) and Cam White (18) also made starts but couldn’t capitalise.

Consistent middle-order batsman Jon Wells kept the scoreboard ticking over and finished unbeaten on 40 while late hitting from Michael Neser (25 from 15) and Rashid Khan (14* off six) lifted Adelaide to 6/176 after 20 overs.

The Strikers couldn’t make an impression early with the ball as Sixers duo Philippe and Justin Avendano (47) put on a 72-run opening partnership.

Late wickets to Peter Siddle (1/39) and Rashid (1/34) gave the Strikers a shot at victory, but the Sixers kept the run rate in check throughout the chase.

Inclusion Harry Conway (1/38) was Adelaide’s only other wicket-taker.
