Match Report: Strikers v Sixers

26 October 2020

A weather-affected day of WBBL06 drama in North Sydney has ended with the Adelaide Strikers falling to Sydney Sixers in dramatic fashion.

Reduced to nine overs a side following heavy rain, Sixers captain Ellyse Perry won the bat flip and sent the Strikers in, an hour and a half past the originally scheduled start time.

The decision looked to be a sound one early, with the Strikers losing their first four wickets for just 14 runs in the opening four overs. Katie Mack then joined Bridget Patterson in the middle and the two put together an innings-saving partnership of 42 from 21 deliveries that ensured Adelaide would set a challenging target for the Sixers.

Patterson fell to Marizanne Kapp (3/14) in the final over for a hastily compiled 28 (14), while a late cameo from Sarah Coyte 10 (5) pushed the Strikers total to 7/68 from nine overs.

Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry got the Sixers reply underway, looking extremely solid with bat in hand. With the Strikers bowling attack unable to find a breakthrough, the weather seemed to be the only thing capable of ending the Sixers charge.

One over short of an official game, the umpires were forced to call for the covers as the rain returned in force. At first appearing to be a match-ending downpour, the conditions would soon sufficiently clear to allow the players back onto North Sydney Oval.

Set a revised target of 46 from six overs, the Sixers lost just one wicket as they reeled in the remaining runs to claim the maiden victory of their BBL06 campaign with two balls to spare.

Alyssa Healy’s 27 (16) earned her player of the match, while her opening partner, Perry, finished unbeaten on 14* (16) to guide the Sixers home. Sarah Coyte claimed the sole Strikers wicket, ending with figures of 1/10.

The Strikers now turn their attention to a clash against Sydney Thunder at Sydney Showground Stadium on Saturday, 31 October. The Thunder are yet to earn a result in WBBL06, with both of their opening fixtures called off due to rain. Fans will again be able to follow live, with the game to be streamed through cricket.com.au and Kayo.
