After raising more than $15,000 for multiple charities throughout rebel WBBL|04, Devine’s wish is to continue to use the popularity of the WBBL competition for a meaningful purpose, outside of cricket.
“I think with the success we had last year raising awareness for a lot of charities and raising money for some really good causes…it was something I wanted to continue,” Devine said.
“I think it is really important to use our platform that we have as cricketers to get out there and show everyone that we can have a bit of a laugh and raise awareness for something that matters.”
The ENTIRE @HurricanesWBBL team did the #headbandchallenge 👏 @mandhana_smriti, @crinny17 & the team are donating to @staychatTY on top of @sophdevine77’s $100! With the new challenge beginning this weekend, Devine will donate $100 to the Strikers’ charity partner, Cancer Council SA after the match on Saturday.
The challenge will then be set for all teams that the Strikers come up against for the remainder of the competition and if they complete it, Devine will donate $100 to a charity of their choice.
“I’m not afraid to look a bit silly and open myself up to a bit of ridicule if it means it’s for a good cause and if we can raise money and shine light on some great charities,” said Devine.
The Kiwi international will be aiming high, urging members of the Australian Women’s Cricket Team in particular, to get involved.
“I’d love to see the big dogs - Ellyse Perry, Alyssa Healy, Rachel Haynes – jump on board,” she said.
“Any of the big Aussie players, but really anyone at all! I hope people will have some fun with it and also feel encouraged to donate, as a lot of teams did last year.”
To find out what the new challenge will be, come along to Karen Rolton Oval on Saturday and Sunday from 1:40pm to see the Strikers take the field. Both matches will also be broadcast on 7 Mate, Fox Cricket and Kayo Sports.
