Crowd records tumble at Strikers semi-final

25 January 2015

History books are being re-written in Adelaide and around Australia after a crowd of 52,633 witnessed the semi-final between the Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Sixers at Adelaide Oval.

One record that goes back more than 80 years to the infamous 'Bodyline' test series has tumbled. These are the records the Strikers’ crowd broke…

BIGGEST BIG BASH LEAGUE CROWD
Beating 46,581 – Renegades v Stars @ MCG (January 2013)

BIGGEST CRICKET CROWD AT ADELAIDE OVAL
Beating 50,962 – Ashes Test Day 2 (Bodyline Series 1934)

BIGGEST CROWD AT REDEVELOPED ADELAIDE OVAL
Beating 52,505 – Port Adelaide v Carlton (AFL Rnd 22 2014)

Tickets only went on sale less than 36 hours before the game was due to start but the ‘Strikeforce’ responded en masse, buying 10,000 tickets in the first ten minutes it went on sale to the public, and leaving only 2,000 tickets left for sale on the day of the game.

All tickets, including extra restricted view seats, sold out at about the time the game started.

The Strikers had already boasted the two biggest crowds of the BBL|04 regular season – both topping 40,000. The Strikers average home crowd before the finals was 36,023, almost 9,000 higher than any other BBL team, and better than any BBL team in any season.

The Strikers’ average regular season crowd also bettered the average crowd of all the major sporting codes in their most recent season, including the AFL’s home-and-away average of 32,333 in 2014.

This season, the Strikers also achieved the highest sales of merchandise in the BBL, and the most website visitors in the BBL.

There can really be no doubt the Strikers have the best fans in the league.

One record unlikely to topple in the next couple of decades at least, is the biggest crowd ever at Adelaide Oval. That belongs to the 1965 SANFL Grand Final when 62,543 people witnessed Port Adelaide defeat Sturt by three points.
